Toy Haulers Bring New Wave In RVs
Sports enthusiasts find fun and convenience in the trailers. It won't be long until Rich and Suezette Lucero of Dallas back up a new travel trailer to a collection of off-road four-wheelers and motorcycles, roll them aboard, then drive off to Arizona to play all winter in the desert. It's a way of life that goes on every weekend, when the mostly younger generation loads up dune buggies and four-wheelers and heads for Florence or Sandlake to play. The style of life, especially the style of getting there, has been radically changed by a recreational vehicle that's become known in the industry as the "toy hauler." It's a pull trailer or a fifth-wheel trailer with living quarters in the front and a garage in the back, and it's on the market under names such as Gear Box, Alfa Toyhouse, Karry-All, Next Level, The Fury and Sportsmen Sportster. "They've come on gangbusters, and they've taken a huge percentage of the market in the last two years," said Greg Nelson, sales manager at Al's Trailer Sales in Tangent. Al's also has an RV lot in Salem. They're a lot like the trailers professional cowboys tow from rodeo to rodeo, their living quarters up front and their horses in the back. They were preceded 15 to 20 years ago by custom-built trailers for stock car and drag-race crews. "Now normal people can own them," said Sandy Jackson, who estimates that 25 percent of her travel trailer sales at Fred's RV World are in toy haulers. "One out of every four people coming on my lot is looking at toy haulers."

Smart Fuel Cell For RVs
SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG has optimized a fuel cell system for use in recreational vehicles (RVs) together with Hymer, the leading manufacturer in this market. At the "Caravan Salon Dusseldorf" trade show, the companies demonstrated how easily the fuel cell system can be installed in an RV and provide electricity to the board grid, providing power for a refrigerator, TV, lights or other devices. The SFC A25 fuel cell system reliably provides 50 amph per day, sufficient for the typical electricity demand of RVs and sailing yachts - in summer and in winter. With a single fuel cartridge of 0.66 gallons of methanol, a hydrogen rich liquid fuel with physical characteristics similar to gasoline, the SFC A25 runs for 70 to 80 hours at full power. A cartridge weighs under 5 pounds, less than 5% of the 110 pound weight of traditional leadacid batteries of similar capacity. Saving weight on an RV is important in order to keep the vehicle`s gross weight within permissible limits. The compact, lightweight, silent, and high-capacity SFC system is an attractive power supply in the leisure market. Traditionally, owners and users of RVs have used solutions such as large batteries coupled to generators or photovoltaic systems. These conventional solutions easily cost several thousand dollars, yet present drawbacks such as limited reliability (solar cells) or high noise emissions and pollution (generators).

Samsung, NHTSA Announce Recall Of Microwave Ovens In RVs
Samsung Electronics, in cooperation with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), announced the recall of nearly 184,000 microwave ovens that were installed in recreational vehicles (RVs) sold in the US during the past 3 years. Samsung has determined that some of these microwave ovens may present a safety hazard due to a defective part that may cause them to begin operation unassisted and result in smoke or fire. Samsung will repair the ovens free of charge for consumers. In the meantime, consumers who own RVs with the affected ovens should unplug the microwaves - or, if that is not possible, leave the microwave door ajar, which will prevent the oven from operating. As a general safety precaution, consumers should never store items in microwave ovens or leave items in the ovens after use. Samsung is currently working with more than 150 RV manufacturers nationwide to arrange to have the microwave ovens repaired for consumers free of charge. The details of the recall and repair procedures are currently being finalized with these manufacturers. Complete instructions for consumers will be issued as soon as the details are finalized.
