Whew! What is that smell? Is that us?!?
|
Not every aspect of camping is a bed of roses. Take the holding tanks for example. Not only do they have to be dumped, but there are times when the fumes from the holding tanks can leak into the coach and make your travel experience a little on the odoriferous side. Most of us use chemicals to mask the odors. But heavy chemical use can cause environmental problems. One other solution is a specially designed venting system that pulls the odors out of the tank, directs them up the vent pipe and away from your rig. Bye bye odors!

Speaking of dumping... Where’s the next dump station?
|
So, you’ve just spent a week parked in Grandma’s driveway. Your holding tanks are full. Now what? If you enjoy dry camping, dumping your holding tanks can be a challenge. There is a website that can help you locate a free or low cost dump station. Just click on a state. The list of dump stations is organized by route numbers followed by any smaller listings such as municipalities. This approach is very helpful when you are on the road. There will either be an exit number or directions included. If you are aware of a dump station that is not listed, there is a link to "Suggest a Site".

The Dangerous Mile
|
When you set out on your first trip in an RV you need nothing more than a standard driver’s license. But driving a big rig can be a real challenge. Consider obtaining a CDL manual (commercial driver’s license) from your local state licensing agency and at least read through it. You may also consider driving lessons that are offered at many RV rallies. Safe driving information is out there if you look for it. Retired professional driver Bob Muessig has a number of practical tips to make your trip a safe one. He discusses the seven types of accidents and gives you recommendations on how to avoid them.

Crossing the Border

If you will be crossing the border this camping season you might want to read this article. You need to think about several documents including papers for children and pets as well as yourself. There are restrictions on foods that can be brought into a country and the list changes frequently. One simple approach is to camp near the border the night before you plan to cross. Drive up to the border and request information. It is best to be prepared.
