I am interested in planning a month-long vacation for myself, my wife and our 2 small children (ages 2 1/2 and 1). I live in New York City. Our plan would be to rent an RV (not sure of what size) and drive it one-way to California and then fly back. I would figure that we would drive 2-3 hours a day 6 days a week.

New York City to California is almost 3,000 miles. I think three hours of driving per day is realistic with two small children. The problem is the amount of time it will take to get there. When you are driving an RV you will average 50 miles per hour on a highway. Yes, I know there are times when you will drive 65 or even 70 miles per hour. But when you factor in breaks for food, refueling, rest, traffic jams, construction and bad weather, you will average 50 miles per hour. If you want to drive on secondary roads, you will average even less. How long will this trip take?

We don’t like to talk about it, but diminished driving capacity will affect everyone eventually. Here is a list of questions to help you determine if you are having a problem. Before you decide it is time to give up driving your RV, look at the things you can do to improve your driving skills. Your doctor can check for vision problems that can be corrected. Certain medications can cause problems if they are not at the optimal level. And just because you can’t drive your RV does not mean you have to get rid of it. There are other options.

We know we have talked about this before, but it is a really important topic. If you are buying and RV, particularly a used RV, you need to check for recalls. When you buy a used RV your name may not get registered with the manufacturer and so they have no way to notify you of a recall. And the previous owner may not have had the necessary work done for a recall from way back when. Take a moment and check for recalls on your RV.

It is affiliated with RCI (Resort Condominiums International) and the point system allows you to access vacation options there as well as an RV. You purchase an amount of time which can be used or banked for future use in either a Discovery or Tioga motorhome.
