Appreciating depreciation: How well do motorcycles hold their value?

When you're drooling over the high-performance machine of your dreams in the showroom, and new-bike fever has you firmly in its grip, resale value may be the last thing on your mind. But should it be part of your buying decision? How much depreciation can you expect?

From the "How stupid can people be" department: Motorcyclists injured by plastic wrap strung across road.

Motorcyclist Daniel Buckel was within 10 feet when he saw the potential disaster stretched across a dark and foggy rural road just ahead. Disbelief turned to fear, then anger, as Buckel's 2-year-old motorcycle hit a barrier of kitchen-variety plastic wrap that was wound thickly from traffic pole to traffic pole on opposite sides of Guthrie Road.

Is This The Right Oil For My Bike?
This report on motorcycle oil is a little older, but it goes into great detail and is definitely worth the read. Not only does it explain what all the different oil codes mean, but also shows graphs of the levels of phosphorus, zinc, acid neatralizers, etc... in different oils. This report seeks to answer questions concerning use of the latest grade of motor oils in motorcycles. Motor oil standards have changed recently and some concerns have been raised, specifically by BMW, about use of this new oil grade in motorcycles. BMW, like many other engine manufacturers, sells a self-branded oil through its dealer network. To some, this raises the question of BMW's objectivity. Mobil 1, long a favorite of motorcyclists, has introduced a line of motorcycle-specific oils. They avoid the latest, questionable API rating, but at a price of double the already pricey automotive Mobil 1. What about old stand-bys like Castrol GTX and the bike-friendly Golden Spectro? They've been used for years. Are they still good? Have they actually changed at all? What's a biker to do?
