Porsche 959 Finally Federalized!
Some still believe it is the premier supercar ever built. As Porsche celebrates the 40th year of the 911, the 959 can easily be called the meanest 911 ever. Though 230 copies of the 959 would be built, none were destined for U.S. sale until Porsche Cars North America racing boss Al Holbert stepped in. When Holbert canvassed Porsche dealers he found enough interest in the $295,000 model to warrant having 30 sent Stateside. Since the 959 could not meet U.S. bumper or ride-height requirements, it was going to be imported as a "race car" rather than a street-going model. Since then, others have schemed to bring the 959 back to the United States. A few have been successful...

Automobiles: The Latest In Transmission Tech
Transmissions generally get no respect. No one oohs and aahs over a solid clutch plate the way they do for a nice, fat V8. But something's got to connect the engine to the wheels, and without the right transmission, that V8 isn't going anywhere. Accordingly, automakers are putting more into tranny tech than ever before, and the fruits of that investment are beginning to hit the streets, often via the racetrack. Paddle shifting, CVTs, seven-speed transmissions: Here are the latest cars showcasing the modern ways that power connects to pavement...

Park Without Dings - or Drivers!
Toyota plans to release a car next month in Japan that parallel parks itself, an Australian newspaper reported. Toyota has rigged its hybrid Prius model with special gear to accomplish the feat. It uses a rear-mounted camera and a computer program to perform the task, consistently making a perfect reverse park without the driver touching the wheel, said Toby Hagon, an editor of The Age, who test-drove the vehicle. Hagon said the self-parking option is the first step toward self-driving cars...

Where The Color Meets The Road
The car ahead of you in the tunnel slams to a stop. Billowing all around you is smoke. It's hard to know where the smoke is coming from and worse, it's hard to know which way to turn. Suddenly, through the murk, the road studs marking the lanes turn green, shimmering in one direction. You follow the pulsing lights that lead you to the exit and safety...

The Intense Volkswagen Concept-R
Just seven days after the world premiere of the new Golf, Volkswagen presents a further facet of automobile fascination: The roadster prototype concept R. The great sharpness in design, seen from every angle, combined with outstanding functional solutions indicates what the Brand has in store for the future and also a possible involvement in the world of real and genuine sports cars. Propulsion for the concept R comes from a V6 mid-engine; It returns 195 kW / 265 brake horse power and accelerates the roadster in 5.3 seconds to 100 km/h. If the propelling power was not governed to 250 km/h, in theory, the top speed would be 270 km/h. The engine torque (350 Newton metres at 2,800 rpm) is transferred to the road via a spectacular Volkswagen direct selection gearbox (DSG / 6-speed) and rear axle. Chosen consciously to provide a contrast, the designers applied colour to the exterior and interior: Frozen sky paint finish, dark earth interior leather...
