Description:
1971 Avanti II Coupe
Studebaker produced the first Avanti in 1963, and though the company was to succumb to fatal financial disease just a year later, the legacy of this phenomenal automobile known as the Avanti lives on nearly half a century later. The Studebaker Corporation was known for quality, performance and cutting edge design, and though the fiberglass bodied Avanti coupe was too late to save a company in deep financial trouble, the advanced platform that Studebaker designer Sherwood Egbert created for this sports coupe set the stage for its enduring legacy, virtually unchanged in basic design through a series of different North American manufacturers.
The Avanti II was produced by the Avanti Motor Corporation after the production rights to this model were acquired following the demise of Studebaker. From 1965 to 1980, this company virtually hand built the Avanti II to custom specifications of their buyers. Over 400 different paint and interior combinations were offered during that time, and the 327 CID Chevrolet engine replaced the 289 CID Studebaker power plants, no longer available from the company owned foundry. The lighter weight, but taller engine block brought better performance than the original car, but required slightly elevated fenders and hood to make room for the bowtie motor. Various engines and chasses have been used until now, and today the very limited production 2007 Avanti, produced in Atlanta, GA, is available with either a 4.0L V6 or 4.6L 300 horsepower 24 Valve V8 engine, either 5 speed manual or automatic transmission, and antilock 4 wheel disk brakes at a mere $80,000.
This Avanti II sport coupe has a 350 CID engine, TH350 automatic transmission, cold air conditioning, power steering, power brakes and power windows. This is a one owner vehicle that has been completely refreshed from bumper to bumper. The paint and interior are new, the engine has been rebuilt and has a new carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, alternator, air compressor, AC condenser, radiator, brakes, battery, dual exhaust system and HEI ignition. New polished 5 spoke alloy wheels are surrounded by new radial tires, and the car has been lowered enough to recapture the rakish lines of the original Avanti. The frame is rust free, and the fiberglass body does not have any stress cracks, crazing, or spiderwebbing. The metallic antique platinum exterior is beautifully accented by a complementary leather and cloth interior with tasteful wood grained accents. Potential buyers are urged to come see this Avanti II coupe. It is spectacular!
