The Boss 302 was named for its 302-cubic-inch V8, which developed 290 horsepower for a car that weighed barely more than 3,000 pounds. Introduced in mid-1964, the Mustang quickly became one of Ford's muscle cars, with models named for their high-powered V-8 engines: the Cobra Jet, Super Cobra, and the Boss 302 and 429. Ford produced 6,318 of the Boss 302s. Mustangs were extremely powerful and were the pace setters in the explosion of muscle cars coming out of Detroit.

Worried about rising gas prices and automobile pollution? Relax. If a European company has its way, cars could soon be running on air. By the end of this year, Moteur Developpment International, a 12-year-old company headquartered in Luxembourg, says it plans to distribute model fleets of so-called "air cars" in Spain and France. As the name implies, this is no ordinary car. It runs entirely on a stream of air delivered to a two-stroke engine. No gasoline, no pollution and no costly expenditures at the pump.

Although this new GTO won't smash GM's silly ten-pounds-of-car-per-cubic-inch-of-engine rule the way the '64 did, it will maneuver smartly around another auto industry chastity belt: the UAW. And while this Aussie-built Goat won't detonate a high-horsepower explosion in this country as the first GTO did - we've got Germans for that now - it is as much a departure from the Pontiac status quo as was the original. In fact, the new GTO may be the best, most erect-walking Pontiac ever put on sale. It's just a little sad that GM had to go all the way to Australia to find it.

This is supposed to be the start of the auto industry's green era, a quiet time of whispery hybrids and oh-so-correct alternative fuels. But the high technology that is helping keep emissions in check is also ushering in a thunderous new age of pavement-pounding horsepower. As a way of understanding the philosophy behind BMW's design direction, and to take a different approach to its cars' new styling, European Car interviewed designers and artists both from within and outside of the automotive industry, including some involved in architectural design, product design, fashion design and fine art.
